About Campy Movies

"Camp" is derived from the French slang term camper, which means "to pose in an exaggerated fashion." It may ultimately derive from the Latin root "campus" meaning "field/farm/country", thereby suggesting some connection to a stereotyped behavior attributed to rural folks, akin to "provincial". The OED gives 1909 as the first citation of "camp" in print, with the sense of "ostentatious, exaggerated, affected, theatrical; effeminate or homosexual; pertaining to or characteristic of homosexuals. So as n., "camp" behavior, mannerisms, etc.; a man exhibiting such behavior." According to the OED, this sense of the word is "etymologically obscure." The term camp originally referred to the deliberate and sophisticated use of kitsch, mawkish or corny themes and styles in art, clothing or conversation. Today, camp has a somewhat different meaning, as the term has grown to also include unintentional camp. In fact, the term camp today is more often used to refer to unintentional camp than intentional camp. A part of the anti-academic defense of popular culture in the sixties, camp came to academic prominence in the eighties with the widespread adoption of the Postmodern views on art and culture. - The preceding paragraphs were derived from a full article available from Wikipedia and its use is governed by the GNU Free Documentation License 1.2.
