About Adventure Movies

Adventure movies typically feature elements of daring and danger. Unlike modern action movies, which often take place in a modern city, often with the hero battling drug dealers or terrorists, an adventure movie usually takes place in the past, often with much sword fighting or swashbuckling. The genre probably reached the peak in popularity during the 1930s and 1940s, when films like Captain Blood, The Adventures of Robin Hood and The Mark of Zorro were regularly being made and a number of major stars, notably Errol Flynn and Tyrone Power, became closely associated with the genre. At the same time, serials were often made using many of the same thematic elements as adventure movies. The genre has undergone periodic revivals, with characters like Robin Hood and Zorro often being re-cast for a new generation of moviegoers. Some of these revivals have been successful, as with Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, and some less successful, as with Swashbuckler. In the 1980s the success of Steven Spielberg''s Raiders of the Lost Ark series spawned a number of imitators that were mostly unsuccessful. There is often some overlap between the adventure movies and other genres. Many adventure movies are also categorized as action movies and there is also much crossover with horror movies. - The preceding paragraph was derived from a full article available from Wikipedia and its use is governed by the GNU Free Documentation License 1.2.
