Plot

The magnificent story of one man's journey from savage warrior into messenger of peace, Asoka traces the life of Emperor Asoka, the grandson of Chandragupta Maurya who ascended the throne of Magadha in the 3rd century BC.

To extend the borders of his empire, Asoka waged one of the bloodiest wars in history with the neighboring kingdom of Kalinga, leaving it ravaged and devastated. Confronted by the aftermath of his conquest in which hundreds of thousands lost their lives, Asoka is overcome with remorse and renounces the path of war to dedicate his life to spreading the teachings of Buddhism across the world. This is a story based on legends, not a complete historical account of Asoka's life, but an attempt to follow his journey.

Reviews:

"Exquisite... confirming this cinematographer-turned-director's rank among the most impressive filmmakers in contemporary Indian cinema." -Toronto International Film Festival
"A sprawling widescreen historical epic, laced with Bollywood musical numbers, melodramatic romance, spectacular locations and violent battle scenes.... ASOKA provides further evidence that Bollywood is poised for wider commercial impact beyond its already substantial established niche." -Variety

I am a big fan of foriegn movies and am used to reading subtitles. However, these are the worst. The actors will speak for a minute or more without any subtitles, then suddenly one line will flash on the screen, something like "the king is near" (I made that up but you get the idea) then they'll talk for another minute with no new subtitle and the action will switch to a battle scene where there's a lot of carrying on and screaming (no subtitles needed) then back to actors speaking with no subtitles, etc. etc. A great film if you are a native Hindi speaker.
