Plot

Cinematic Titanic - Episode 8

Kung Fu hits the streets!

Young Larry Chin arrives from China looking for his long-lost brother and stumbles into some shady characters that'd just as soon see him go home - or get dead. He crosses paths with Stud Brown, and the two become an unlikely duo as they fight to clean up the 'hood, and make time for some lady loves they meet along the way. And hang on tight for the surprise twist ending. It's all living color kungsploitation glory, live with Cinematic Titanic.

it's different, but still worth it.

This one is shot live, with the crew on stage and not in silhouette. The audience provides a laugh track, and it's probably the most vibrant show they've ever done because of these factors. As for the movie itself, it's a 70s (I think) "Kungsploitation" (as Joel calls it) film that has some very mockable elements to it: from riffing on Kung Fu to beating up the movie's portrayals of race, the gang is spot on. If you love these movies and you want something just a little bit different and more personal, this is a great pick. If you're new to the genre, you might want to start with a more classic choice first like the old MST3K episodes, or any other Cinematic Titanic movie available here.

I really REALLY wanted to like this one - the movie itself bears repeated viewing, so i guess it's all good.

The Pros: finally, we get to see the CiTans behind the silhouette for the first time. How they look, their mannerisms, the way they interact with the source material, the audience, and each other, etc.

The Cons: pretty much any pitfall that comes with doing a live recording. Not too crazy about a "laughtrack". When it works, it energizes the riff immensely, but then you get the odd botched line, the jokes that either went over people's heads or didn't quite hear (or god forbid, bombed), and the groans. The groans bothered me a lot.

Maybe most of my criticisms can be offset if we could get to see the audience's reaction, but unlike say a music concert or a comedy show, the sheer uniqueness of the presentation means that the viewer's focus has to be squarely on the riffing 100 percent. I'm not entirely sure where the DVD can further improve in order to adequately capture the magic of a live performance for something like Cinematic Titanic. One of those "you had to be there" sort of things, i suppose.

Mind you, the spit takes were beautifully captured in all its full glory, immortalized on film - and on Frank Conniff's hair - for all time.

    **** of 5 stars.

By far CT's best yet. I was concerned about the live performance. I like the familiar silhouettes. But this is a glimpse at their live shows, and the charge they have from being on stage (and from each other) is great. The audience laugh sound levels are low enough to not be distracting. Best riffs from the group yet are in here.

An interesting approach to riffing this time, with a live audience. Very entertaining and well done.

Very funny riffing. The movie itself is so bad, but that is the point of MST3K and Cinematic Titanic. Along with "Blood of the Vampires" it is one of the 2 best episodes by the team- and all episodes are great.
