| Customer Comments | | Reviewer: Film Junkie on 12/12/05 | | | Charles Coburn does a great job playing Colonel Effingham, a retired military officer who returns home to his rural Georgia town to find that the local government is being run by some unprincipled politicians, while the local newspaper is too cowed to stand up to them. About half-way through the film, the character William Eythe, Al Marbury, realizes that he has a bad case of the "hots" for Ella Sue Dozier, the character played by the beautiful Joan Bennett. Ella eventually helps Al find his backbone. A fluffy, yet enjoyable, film. Good to watch with the kids and grandparents. There are some interesting cultural contrasts between this 1940s movie and the attitudes of today. |
