Dixiana
1930
A circus performer becomes the center of affections for two men in this RKO musical starring Bebe Daniels. Dixiana (Daniels) is loved by a plantation owner's son and she loves him but she is also coveted by a crooked gambler who also is looking to swindle the plantation away from the family. Add to this romantic triangle the comedic talents of Wheeler & Woolsey and the first time on screen performance of Bill "Bojangles" Robinson and you've got a winner.
Palooka
1934
The story centers on Joe Palooka (Stuart Erwin), the son of a boxing champ who abandoned his family once achieving fame. Joe was raised by his mother on a farm and far away from the loose lifestyle his father has taken up. Discovered by fight manager Knobby Walsh (Jimmy Durante), Joe is signed to fight the champ as an easy opponent for Al McSwatt (William Cagney). Joe beats the champ when McSwatt shows up for the fight drunk and also wins over McSwatt's girlfriend. Joe takes up the lifestyle his father once did, due to the influence of his new girlfriend, and also wins more fights, due to set-ups by Knobby. Joe ends up facing reality when a rematch fight with McSwatt is signed. This film was based on the popular comic strip by Ham Fisher.
