Plot

In this film, shot in the grasslands of Mongolia, director Feng Xiaoning continues in his series of Chinese historical epics. This bio-pic sweeps across the screen with the story of Gada Meilin, a Mongolian tribesman who struggles to protect the Horqin grasslands from desertification in the 1930's. Through his battles with his tribe's chieftan and local government officials, Meilin has come to be regarded as a kind of modern day folk hero among the Mongolian people.

An Epic Tale Set in Spectacular Mongolian Grasslands

Originating from a famous Mongolian epic tale, Gada Meilin is the story of a reluctant leader who guides his people to victory against a tyrannical government who wants to steal their land. At the turn of the 20th century, Mongolia is still very much locked in an agricultural, feudal way of life. When part of their land is sold to the invading Japanese, tribal chieftain Gada Meilin bravely organizes the squabbling clans of the region to revolt against the Mongolian government. In the course of his struggles against the forces of greed and injustice, Meilin becomes a hero and native legend to the Mongolian people. In this story of heroism, Gada Meilin is thrust into the pages of history.

With breathtaking cinematography, the images of sky and earth combine to form a magnificent picture as vast green grasslands stretch into the horizon and white clouds float like cotton in the sky. The film also features native Mongolian music by San Bao and Tang Ga-al. Highlighting the fascinating local customs and uninhibited character of the Mongolian people, Gada Meilin portrays this unforgettable symphonic poem of heroes.
