Plot
Starring Chinese superstar Zhang Ziyi (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Hero), this film by Director Lou Ye allies a swooning, lyrical romanticism with tones of Western film noir mixing into a monumental, Leone-esque narrative sweep into an epic tale of mistaken identity, erotic longing, doomed political passion, and furious action.The magnetic Ding Hui (Zhang Ziyi) is a member of Purple Butterfly, a powerful resistance group in Japanese occupied Shanghai. An unexpected encounter reunites her with Itami (Nakamura Tooru), an ex-lover - now an officer with a secret police unit tasked with dismantling Purple Butterfly.

This is a great film. At first, it's a bit difficult to follow; however, it manages to pull everything together very nicely. The acting and cinematography is great too.
