This film made Autry a star! It's the campy, yet very enjoyable feature version of the classic Mascot serial, The Phantom Empire. Released simultaneously, it was in some ways bigger than the original serial itself. Gene and his pals discover the weird underground city of Murania. A campy blend of sci-fi and western thrills. Love those tin can robots. They don't make 'em like this anymore. Ken Maynard was originally intended to star but was fired by Nat Levine for drinking too much and in general just being a bit of a jerk. From a beautiful 16mm original print.
