Something Within Me - Movie Download

Plot

St. Augustine's school is located in the poorest section of the South Bronx. With attendance down the school faced a certain closure when the teachers and principal decided to commit the school to an arts curriculum, one where the arts, and especially music, were treated with the importance of any academic subject.

This is the story of this remarkable school and the children whose lives it has shaped. In a course of six years, the enrollment tripled and academic scores once among the lowest in New York improved dramatically. Through interviews and extraordinary footage - Something Within Me offers an intimate look at the education process and the effectiveness of one of our nation's most underdeveloped teaching tools, the arts.

A great film for teachers and anyone else interested in new approaches for educating children. Although the movie is about a Catholic school in the South Bronx, only 20% of the pupils are Catholic, and I suspect a lot of the faculty members are not Catholic either. The point being: why can't we create great learning environments like this in all schools, not just faith-based institutions? At any rate, I applaud the dedication of both the staff and students of Saint Augustine. These folks have had to overcome incredible challenges that most Americans never have to even think about. And since the documentary is only about one hour long, it's a relatively quick download.
