What better way to convey the opulence and artificiality that cloys the emperor than puppet animation? In fact, there?s a marked contrast between the lacy, spangly setting of the emperor?s palace and the more natural and ?real? environment of the nightingale. This tactic proves useful in demonstrating the choreographed uniformity of the emperor?s courtiers. It also underscores the movie?s efforts to appeal to children, in case the voice over narration and young protagonists didn?t provide enough of a hint.
Despite targeting the child demographic, The Emperor?s Nightingale manages to reach older viewers as well. Once the viewer comes to terms with the rather outlandish puppet designs, they become strangely beautiful and artistic. The morals of the story apply equally to viewers of all ages: break custom when necessary, and experience life firsthand rather than vicariously. |
