Clopin (Ernest Torrence) bought Esmeralda (Patsy Ruth Miller) from gypsies when she was a little girl. Jehan (Brandon Hurst), the twisted evil brother of the Archdeacon, orders Quasimodo (Lon Chaney), the Hunchback of Notre Dame, to kidnap Esmeralda. Phoebus, Captain of the Guards, rescues Esmeralda from Quasimodo. Esmeralda falls for Phoebus and Quasimodo is flogged in the public square. The action really gets going when Esmeralda is blamed for an attempt on the life of Phoebus. Several people, including Phoebus, try to rescue Esmeralda from being punished for a crime she did not commit.

The music score is pretty good, although the film print can be a little shaky, which is not surprising since the original print was made over 80 years ago. The video quality is the only thing that stopped me from giving this one 5 stars. Lon Chaney is great as Quasimodo. |
