Plot

Alfred Hitchcock called this silent film the second real Hitchcock movie. It is the only film that he directed where he was also the sole writer. It stars One-Round Jack Sander (Carl Brisson), a circus sideshow boxer whose streak of first-round knockouts ends when he faces an Australian boxer (Ian Hunter), who is actually the heavyweight boxing champion. The Aussie offers the defeated Brisson a sparring position. But the champ's interest has more to do with Brisson's fiancee, Mabel (Lillian Hall-Davis). The two boxers meet again in the ring to determine who will win the woman's heart.

The film being silent, nearly everything is expressed to the viewer visually. The nameless Girl and Corby’s affair manifests itself in a bangle that Corby gives her, and she makes every effort to hide it from Jack, clutching her arm guiltily. Most notable are Hitchcock’s efforts to portray subjectivity. Superimposition enables the viewer to see what lies in the mind’s eye of the characters, most often Jack. In a jealous fit, he visualizes Corby and his wife kissing. When Jack catches on to the Girl’s infidelity, he projects Corby’s face onto a punching bag. The visual clues to the characters’ thoughts and feelings would be subtle, but Hitchcock takes care to keep the viewer aware of them through the use of close-ups. The Ring, with its emphasis on the psychological state of its main character, shows traces of what would become one of Hitchcock’s trademarks. While not the most novel or gripping plot, The Ring will definitely please fans of Hitchcock and/or silent films. For the more casual viewer, I’d still recommend it, though the joy will come more from the interesting visual execution of the predictable plot.
