| Customer Comments | | Reviewer: Dec_21st_2012 on 02/17/09 | | | A good movie, showing secret societies and even today we have them. The quality is not too good but what do you expect from a movie from 1935! We should all be aware that secret societies exist and instead of being thugs in this movie, they are government officials who plot against us. But it is vintage Sherlock Holmes at it's black and white best. Basil Rathborn (spelling?) does make a commanding performance later in the 40s but this movie and the way it was made should show you the times and in how they lived. The forensics are resonable deduction by Holmes, it is a good beginning portrait of the Detective at the height of his career. And even then Sherlock can't retire, crime won't let him rest. It is good viewing from the past even though today Holmes has more character bestowed upon him by other actors. So enjoy the pre-WWII cast of the hero Detective at work, he brings out the brains in all of us. |
