| Plot |
Charles Beaumont (Robert Frazer) invites Madeleine (Madge Bellamy) and Neil (John Harron) to join him at his mansion on the island of Haiti. But because Charles is in love with Madeleine, he asks Legendre (Bela Lagosi) to help him win the young girl. Legendre has learned how to turn people into zombies and he is also running a factory staffed by the living dead. Legendre decides to keep Madeleine for himself and do away with Beaumont. Neil and a missionary named Dr. Bruner (Joseph Cawthorn), try to free Madeleine.

May be a bit too slow and creaky for today's audiences, but Lugosi sure is creepy here and some of the images are still haunting. On the minus side is the acting by some of the supporting actors and the so-so quality of the film stock. I'm not sure if this is the Roan release that EZ Takes is using, but despite this being the best I've ever seen the film, there's still a lot of lines and spots running throughout "White Zombie". Someone should definitely restore this movie! This is probably the best you're likely to see for now though.

Worth Downloading: Yes, if you're a serious horror movie nut. Others beware.

This film offers a variety of aesthetic enjoyments, from its dreamlike atmosphere to its expressionist imagery to its effective use of music. Moreover, Bela Lugosi really gets his teeth into the role of Murder Legendre. It's some of the best Lugosi you'll see in any film. Of course the film creaks a bit, and some of the acting is pretty spotty; but the strong stuff in WHITE ZOMBIE more than outweighs the weak. |
